“Fourth Degree marks the transition from Novice to Expert Black Belt and the beginning of a greater responsibility for teaching, examining, and preserving the technical standards of Taekwon-Do.”

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

Fourth Degree marks the beginning of the Expert Black Belt level. Through Yon-Gae, Ul-Ji, and Moon-Moo, practitioners encounter increasingly complex techniques and combinations requiring greater balance, control, and precision, along with a mature understanding of the principles developed throughout the previous curriculum.

BLACK BELT DEVELOPMENT

At Fourth Degree, the Black Belt enters the Instructor level and assumes greater responsibility for the development of students and the technical standards of the dojang.  An Instructor should be capable of independently teaching the complete color belt and Black Belt curriculum within their level of qualification, conducting examinations, mentoring junior instructors, and maintaining the technical standards expected within their dojang.

Qualified International Instructors and Examiners may conduct Black Belt examinations and recommend or certify students within the authority granted by their organization. At this level, the Instructor begins assuming direct responsibility for the ranks they award, including the proper preparation, examination, and certification of their students.

So-San · Se-Jong

“Fifth Degree represents continued growth as an Expert Black Belt, where technical knowledge, teaching experience, and leadership should increasingly be used to develop students, instructors, and the dojang as a whole.”

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

Fifth Degree continues the advanced study of the Expert Black Belt curriculum through So-San and Se-Jong. At this level, practitioners should demonstrate a mature understanding of techniques, movements, applications, and the principles developed throughout the complete curriculum. Training should extend beyond the performance of individual patterns to include the ability to analyze, explain, correct, and teach the technical details that allow others to develop a deeper understanding of Taekwon-Do.

BLACK BELT DEVELOPMENT

At Fifth Degree, an Instructor should possess the experience and technical knowledge necessary to take a greater role in developing students and junior instructors. Responsibilities may include overseeing curriculum, mentoring developing instructors, conducting examinations within their authority, and helping maintain consistent technical and instructional standards throughout the dojang.

Tong-Il

“Sixth Degree represents the culmination of the Expert Black Belt level and the completion of the Chang-Hon pattern curriculum, while preparing the practitioner for the greater responsibilities associated with Master rank.”

TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

Sixth Degree culminates the Expert Black Belt pattern curriculum with Tong-Il, the final pattern of the Chang-Hon system. At this level, technical development is no longer measured primarily by the acquisition of new patterns, but by the depth of understanding demonstrated throughout the entire curriculum. Practitioners should continually refine previously learned material while developing the ability to interpret, apply, teach, and preserve the technical principles of Taekwon-Do at the highest level expected of an Expert Black Belt.

BLACK BELT DEVELOPMENT

At Sixth Degree, an Instructor should demonstrate the maturity, knowledge, leadership, and teaching ability expected of the highest level of Expert Black Belt. Responsibilities extend beyond individual students to the development of instructors, preservation of technical standards, and continued growth of the dojang and Taekwon-Do community. A Sixth Degree should be capable of guiding junior instructors while helping ensure that the knowledge and traditions of Taekwon-Do are accurately passed to future generations.
